Documentary Project
Lauren Swain, film maker from Mind’s Eye Production, and Barbara Eiswerth, Coordinator, Iskash*taa Refugee Harvesting Network, filmed and interviewed Tucson refugees, volunteers, and advocates in 2006 to create Iskash*taa: An Invitation to Community, a local documentary to educate Tucson about the Somali Bantu and other refugees. The films explains the many ways the public can get involved and make a difference through Iskash*taa Refugee Harvesting Network or other groups working with refugees.
Iskash*taa: An Invitation to Community, premiered Wednesday, January 31st at The Loft Cinema.
Somali Tamale - Fun with Fruit
Youth programs that help raise awareness of local food resources here in Tucson and assist in harvesting fruit that would otherwise go to waste. Youth volunteers and refugees learn to identify & record locations of these fruit trees to make a map, and through the ancient practice of “gleaning”. We use locally-grown fruits and vegetables to make marmalades, juices, and variety of local recipes. We take our products and our new knowledge of local foods to The Community Food Bank’s Santa Cruz Farmer’s Market to sell and raise awareness of locally grown produce. Fun with Fruit programs includes field trips to Farms and neighborhoods to harvest hundreds of fruits or pumpkins & squash to feed families in need! We learn and work along side of refugees from Somalia, Liberia, and Sudan.View video from UA Channel.
Tucsonrefugees Yahoo Group
The Tucsonrefugees listserv was created for those working with refugees to share their ideas, experiences, ask questions, etc. and is an excellent way to exchange feedback, encouragement, and share experiences. Members can also share files, events, and pertinent links. The group was started in 2004 and includes volunteers, refugee resettlement agencies, school districts, health and safety professionals, refugees, non-profits, and other service providers. Through active participation, we can improve our communication, help each other, and avoid duplication. To contact the moderators, Barbara Eiswerth or Micah Boyer, fill out the Contact Us page on this website.
