Why do we teach about pools? Refugees may have spent most of their lives in refugee camps or in hot countries where they never saw a pool. Many refugees arrive in Tucson without knowing how to swim or how to play safely in and around pools. Upon arrival, refugees are excited to find that their apartment complex has a pool but don't know how to use it safely. This has resulted in many sad and scary incidents that can be easily avoided.
Information about pools: Iskashitaa works to create informational flyers about safe pool use in refugee's native languages. This information can then be posted at apartment complexes, in classrooms, or given to refugees. If you speak an African, Asian, or Middle Eastern language and are interested in helping with translating please contact our volunteer coordinator.
Swim Lessons: Each summer Iskash*taa volunteers teach swimming and stress safe pool activities in the many apartment pools around town. The City of Tucson has generously opened their Catalina pool for us to teach swim lessons for refugees 10 years old and up. Refugees need not have a bathing suit – shorts and a T-shirt will work as the staff understands cultural sensitivity. Iskash*taa organizes the youth and transportation with the help of Iskash*taa volunteers, TUSD teachers, and others making these fun filled Saturdays a big success July and August each year.
If you are interested in volunteering with our swimming lesson program please contact our volunteer coordinator. Remember to tell us if have any special skills such as a certified lifeguard.
